One of our target investigation jobs continues at a former RAF airfield in Cambridgeshire – last week the team found and coordinated the removal of a number of practice bombs from the site.
Many targets remain to be excavated and investigated, so it will be interesting to see what else is uncovered.
These finds serve to demonstrate typical types of UXO-related contamination that are very frequently encountered at former military airfield sites.
As a result of training, ground exercises, ordnance storage, defence etc. it is not uncommon for weaponry to be buried and disposed of at such sites, and this potential for contamination should be born in mind when planning developments or intrusive works on old airfield.
