1st Line Defence have recently been working closely with our client to create and implement a UXO Risk Mitigation Strategy for a project in Leighton Buzzard.
Preliminary research confirmed that the site had been used as a mortar range during WWII. The client was concerned about the risk of encountering Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) during vegetation clearance/burning operations that were planned.
We deployed a UXO Search & Clear team to support the works and provide safe areas for the burning to take place. During the search, we discovered a Live 2-inch high explosive mortar round within one of the proposed burning areas.
Investigation of other ferrous targets were identified as fragmentation shards from previously detonated mortars, which were also removed from the working area to allow planned works to proceed safely.
